Graphics Cards

Computer graphics card is known by different names: video card, video adapter, graphics-accelerator card, display adapter, graphics card, AGP card are all graphics cards whose function is to generate and output images to a display. Many video cards offer additional functions, such as accelerated rendering of 3D scenes and 2D graphics, video capture, TV-tuner adapter, MPEG-2/MPEG-4 decoding, FireWire, light pen, TV output, or the ability to connect multiple monitors. Modern high performance video cards are used for more graphically demanding purposes, such as PC games.

Video hardware are usually integrated on the motherboard of todays home computer. The quality of graphics on the built-in graphics controller varies widely depending on the chipset used for graphics. To enhance the graphics capability of your computer, you can insert a graphics card, if your computer has a provision or a slot for the purpose. The slots for graphics cards have evolved as technology evolved. Today (year 2010), the standard slot for graphics is a PCI Express slot. Its immediate predecessor was the AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) slot. Prior to AGP slots, the PCI slot was used to insert the graphics card too.

Graphics cards have one or more GPUs (graphics processor units) which accesses memory present on the card itself.
