Sound Cards

Sound capabilities in a PC started with a beep from a built-in speaker capable of responding to a square wave. Later on external ISA half-duplex cards, ISA full-duplex cards evolved to PCI cards and even USB audio interfaces.

A sound card otherwise known as an audio card or sometimes called an audio interface is a computer expansion card for the input and output of audio signals to and from a computer controlled by computer programs. Sound cards are used to provide the audio component for multimedia applications such as music composition, editing video or audio, presentation, education, and games. Many computers have sound capabilities built in to their motherboard, while others require additional expansion cards to provide audio capability. Generally the features of the built-in sound cards are limited while there are many expansion cards that provide a host of powerful features.

There are many manufacturers of sound cards. Creative Technology, Asus, C-max, E-Mu systems, Diamond multi-media are a few of them. The most popular among them in the consumer market is Creative. Their product, the sound blaster family of cards was the leader during most of the PC evolution. Sound Blaster Live! is a popular PCI add-on sound card from Creative Technology.
